Once you've learned how to cast on and knit, what do you do when the pattern is finished? Then you need to cast off. It's a simple skill, and is easy to master.

Time: 5 minutes

Materials
Knitting needles
Yarn
A knitted item

Method
Start with all your knitting on the left needle and then knit (or purl) two stitches on to your right needle.

Knitting, cat

Gently insert the left needle into the first stitch you knitted.

Knitting, cast off

Lift the first stitch over the second stitch. You will know only have one stitch on the right needle.

Knitting, cast off

Knit another stitch onto the right needle and then repeat lifting the first stitch over the second.

When you only have one stitch left, cut a short tail of yarn and thread it through the last stitch. Then let it slip off the needle and pull the tail tight. You have now cast off!
