Force Quit Apps on an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch

If an app is not working properly, or of your iDevice is lagging or seems buggy, then you may need for force quit some apps.

10-20 seconds

An iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch


Start by tapping the home button on your iDevice twice in rapid succession. You should get a screen like the one illustrated below.

NOTE: If Siri opens instead of the screen above, it means you have either tapped the home button too quickly or not quickly enough.

You can now swipe from side to side to find the app or apps you would like to have closed.

Once you have found an app you wish to force quit, swipe up. You should see the app leave the screen once it has closed.

To leave this screen, tap the home button once more.

Closing apps in this fashion will keep your device running smoothly. You may need to go through this process each time your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch feels bogged down or when apps start to crash.
