Host a Successful Team Building Event

by Michael S (follow)
Team building events and activities can help to increase overall team performance and promote strong relationships in the workplace. However, if they are poorly planned, they can be a big waste of both money and time. Read on to learn of some helpful tips to plan a successful team building event.

Choose an objective
Having an overall objective will help you to easily plan, execute and measure the success of your event. For example, your company might be merging teams and may wish for the team building event to result in improved communication skills and development of new relationships. Or it might be something a little more simple like the company wanting their team to get along better and work more efficiently together. Whatever the objective may be, your team building event and activities should be centered around achieving this objective in the end.

Choose a location
Choosing the correct venue and location for your team building activity is very important. Firstly you will need to establish what you want the venue to provide your team. Do you need them to cater and assist with the running of the activities, or do you just simply need somewhere to hold it and you’ll do all the word? If you are looking for a venue to go to where you will be organising all the food and running of the activities, than you could go to a hall for a small fee or even just hold it at your office. Or if you need somewhere with extra help, a hotel or conference centre might be better off. However, these places will incur larger fees and may not fit within your budget so make sure you choose wisely.

Get help from professionals
Choosing an event planning company to help plan your team building can be very beneficial. Event planning companies hold extensive knowledge about what activities are best, where you should hold your event and the right time to do so. They also have partnerships with hotels and corporate event venues, which means they can help you with getting the best deal. You may also consider hiring professionals to help with administering the exercises, depending on your overall budget. That way you can sit back and observe the team and also be provided with professional feedback at the end.

Get feedback after the event
Ask your team to provide feedback a few weeks after the event. This will help you to assess the success of the activity you planned, along with help to better plan future events. Feedback will also help you to establish areas for improvement among employees and will allow you to document their progress over time. It will also show you what employees liked and disliked about the team building activity and influence your choice of future activities.

Pick appropriate activities
You not only want to pick activities which will help accomplish your goals, but also ones that are going to be well received by the majority of the team. Picking anything that’s too active or out there may deter employees from attending or participating in the event properly. Try to find the right balance between something fun and exciting but also practical for achieving your goals.
