Dear old Dadóhe puts up with so much, is often content to be relegated to a tiny area of the home, sheds and garages, yet he never fails to show his love and generosity, taking care of the tasks required to keep the homestead up and running. You know the guy deserves more. A lot more. Which is why youíre considering giving Dad a special place to escape thatís his and his alone. Man cave? Hobby corner? The mother lode of all sheds? How Ďbout a place to share beers with his best buds? The theme and place is up to you, but you donít have to fly solo. Muster the troops. Share ideas. Keep the escape secret until itís ready to be revealed! Need inspiration? Keep reading!

Scope out the territory. Peek into corners, closets, garages, sheds and anywhere else that might serve as Dadís Domain. Perhaps thereís an attic dormer that needs a clean out or a space under the stairs thatís doing nothing but collecting junk. If your imagination flags, donít give up! Enlist kids, friends or relatives to provide ideas for morphing dead space into a wonderland based on your manís hobbies and interests.

Refurbish the area. Once youíve identified a place that begs to become Dadís Great Escape, itís time to get down and dirty. Pack, throw, sweep, paint, mop, repairódo anything thatís needed to give the area youíve targeted a fresh look thatís inviting and welcoming. If youíve selected an area thatís in so much disrepair, everyone avoids it, Dad would never even think to look there while your project is under construction!

Install shelves. Whatís your manís pastimeóhobbyóinterest? Whether he collects stamps, likes to do woodworking, dabbles in homemade beers, crafts birdhouses, likes to fish or heís into model aircraft, the guy needs a place to ďstow his stuff.Ē Provide that storage by finding shelving units that fit the space youíre re-making, install the shelves and youíve got a great leg up on readying the area for his great escape.

Don't panic--if the escape is in plain sight. Letís say your challenge is daunting because youíre creating an escape in an area thatís heavily trafficked. Donít fret. Hereís your game plan: Measure, make notes, shop, create and do everything necessary to prepare the designated area, hiding away components in areas not privy to Dadís snooping and swoop in on a day Dadís gone at the office or (if youíre lucky) an overnight fishing trip with friends. If everythingís ready to be put into place, the hardest part of your job will already have been done.

Personalize the space with a sign. When it comes to making sure your manís escape is organized just for him, nothing says ďItís all yoursĒ like a sign designating his restricted area. Donít fall back on ďDadís EscapeĒ unless you canít come up with something more personalized. For example: A sign reading Dadís Stamp of Approval (for stamp collectors), Bobís Brew Pub (if you can rhyme a letter of his name, all the better!), Dadís for the Birds (birders wonít take offense!) or Popís Fishing Headquarters all work to identify the area thatís designated only for one lucky guy.

Stage an ďescape warming.Ē Once the hard work and secret keeping are history, itís time to reveal the escape surprise and what better way to christen the area than with a little party? Refreshments arenít just suggested; theyíre required. Beverages, snacks, a celebratory cakeóyou know what your man loves and this is the time to roll out his favorites. Now, once youíve revealed the big surprise, hereís your next act of generosity: Promise Dad you wonít disturb him when heís hunkered down in privateóand ask the kids to take that pledge, too. After all, if itís not a place Dad can go for some undisturbed ďmeĒ time, his 2015 isnít going to be nearly as much fun!
