Dear old Dad—he puts up with so much, is often content to be relegated to a tiny area of the home, sheds and garages, yet he never fails to show his love and generosity, taking care of the tasks required to keep the homestead up and running. You know the guy deserves more. A lot more. Which is why you’re considering giving Dad a special place to escape that’s his and his alone. Man cave? Hobby corner? The mother lode of all sheds? How ‘bout a place to share beers with his best buds? The theme and place is up to you, but you don’t have to fly solo. Muster the troops. Share ideas. Keep the escape secret until it’s ready to be revealed! Need inspiration? Keep reading!
Scope out the territory. Peek into corners, closets, garages, sheds and anywhere else that might serve as Dad’s Domain. Perhaps there’s an attic dormer that needs a clean out or a space under the stairs that’s doing nothing but collecting junk. If your imagination flags, don’t give up! Enlist kids, friends or relatives to provide ideas for morphing dead space into a wonderland based on your man’s hobbies and interests.
Refurbish the area. Once you’ve identified a place that begs to become Dad’s Great Escape, it’s time to get down and dirty. Pack, throw, sweep, paint, mop, repair—do anything that’s needed to give the area you’ve targeted a fresh look that’s inviting and welcoming. If you’ve selected an area that’s in so much disrepair, everyone avoids it, Dad would never even think to look there while your project is under construction!
Install shelves. What’s your man’s pastime—hobby—interest? Whether he collects stamps, likes to do woodworking, dabbles in homemade beers, crafts birdhouses, likes to fish or he’s into model aircraft, the guy needs a place to “stow his stuff.” Provide that storage by finding shelving units that fit the space you’re re-making, install the shelves and you’ve got a great leg up on readying the area for his great escape.
Don't panic--if the escape is in plain sight. Let’s say your challenge is daunting because you’re creating an escape in an area that’s heavily trafficked. Don’t fret. Here’s your game plan: Measure, make notes, shop, create and do everything necessary to prepare the designated area, hiding away components in areas not privy to Dad’s snooping and swoop in on a day Dad’s gone at the office or (if you’re lucky) an overnight fishing trip with friends. If everything’s ready to be put into place, the hardest part of your job will already have been done.
Personalize the space with a sign. When it comes to making sure your man’s escape is organized just for him, nothing says “It’s all yours” like a sign designating his restricted area. Don’t fall back on “Dad’s Escape” unless you can’t come up with something more personalized. For example: A sign reading Dad’s Stamp of Approval (for stamp collectors), Bob’s Brew Pub (if you can rhyme a letter of his name, all the better!), Dad’s for the Birds (birders won’t take offense!) or Pop’s Fishing Headquarters all work to identify the area that’s designated only for one lucky guy.
Stage an “escape warming.” Once the hard work and secret keeping are history, it’s time to reveal the escape surprise and what better way to christen the area than with a little party? Refreshments aren’t just suggested; they’re required. Beverages, snacks, a celebratory cake—you know what your man loves and this is the time to roll out his favorites. Now, once you’ve revealed the big surprise, here’s your next act of generosity: Promise Dad you won’t disturb him when he’s hunkered down in private—and ask the kids to take that pledge, too. After all, if it’s not a place Dad can go for some undisturbed “me” time, his 2015 isn’t going to be nearly as much fun!
