Step 1 – The Preparations

First and foremost, you’re going to need to take the time to begin making preparations. Most individuals will be replacing an older unit and this will require a little bit of work. This means that you’re going to need to strip out the older unit and get rid of it. After this, you’ll need to make sure that you protect the remainder of the room. If the room is fitted with drywall you’re going to need to protect it or replace it! Honestly, you’re better off with glass or ceramic tile! Once you’ve made the adjustments, you will want to make sure to use silicone to seal all of the cracks and crevices.

Step 2 – Determining The Height

Next you’re going to need to choose a height! It is essential to ensure that you have at least 8 feet of space for your steam room. This will provide you with a sufficient amount of space for the steam build-up. This can also help to prevent cold spots, which would be undoubtedly very annoying. Make sure that the ceiling has a slight slant to it. This will prevent the stream and water from dropping down on you. Instead, it’ll run down the wall and into the drain.

Step 3 – Preparing the Bathtub

Are you building a full-size steam room or are you trying to convert one? If you’re going to be leaving the bathtub in place, you will need to make sure to enclose the tub. In order to provide the bathroom with a little bit of airflow, you will need to make sure to leave a slight gap underneath the door. Of course, if you’re building a full sized steam room, this won’t be a problem. You should make sure that this type of room is completely airtight.

Step 4 – Installing Vapor Barrier

It is vital that you take the time to install a vapor barrier, which will line the entire steam room completely. This step must be completed, whether you are converting your old bathtub into a steam room or building a new one. You will simply nail the vapor barrier to the walls and ceiling, but make sure that you overlap the final seam, so that no steam will be able to escape. The vapor barrier should reach all the way down to the bathroom floor, so that steam condensation can smoothly slide down into the drain.

Step 5 – The Steam Generator

Finally, you’ll need to begin working to get your steam generator installed. This shouldn’t be done, until you are absolutely certain that no steam or water will be able to get outside of the room! When attempting to install this piece of equipment, you will need to be extremely careful and follow all of the manufacturer’s provided instructions. This will ensure that the installation is complete in a smooth and safe manner. In some cases, it might be better to hire a professional technician to perform the task for you.

At the end of the day, building your own steam room will provide you with some awesome benefits. Heck, everyone wants one of these rooms. With this in mind, you should make sure to follow all of the instructions above to ensure that it is done in the right manner.
