Make SelfRaising Flour

Make SelfRaising Flour

Posted 2013-09-16 by Natasha Stewartfollow
Self-raising flour is a common ingredient in many Australian recipes. It is generally just flour with a raising agent, so that you don't have to add extra baking powder or bicarb soda to the recipe.

There are a couple of reasons why you might want to make your own self-raising flour at home. It's a good substitute if you've run out, but it can also be more reliable than store bought self-raising flour because you're always using the same ratios.

Time: 5 minutes

Materials
Plain flour (all purpose flour)
Baking powder

or

Plain flour
Bicarb soda
Cream of tartar

Method

  • Measure out your flour.

  • For every cup of flour add two teaspoons of baking powder.

  • Mix together and then sift well to make sure the baking powder is well incorporated.

  • Alternatively, use one teaspoon of cream of tartar and half a teaspoon of bicarb soda instead.

  • Use your self-raising flour straight away, or package up your pre-weighed mix and use it next time you're baking.
